Soil Blocking

Gardening should be good for the planet and my biggest pet peeve starting this journey was the amount of plastic I thought I needed to use for seed starting… enter soil blocking!

Soil blocking offers several benefits for seed starting and transplanting. It promotes stronger, healthier root systems by air-pruning the roots, which encourages more branching rather than the circling that can occur in traditional pots. Soil blocks also reduce transplant shock, as seedlings are moved to the garden with their entire root system intact and undisturbed. Additionally, soil blocking is an eco-friendly option, as it eliminates the need for plastic pots and trays. The blocks provide excellent drainage and aeration, creating an ideal environment for seeds to germinate and grow.

I use a kit from amazon - starting seeds in the smaller blocks, moving them to the 2 inchers (they look like brownies!) then ultimately planting them out in the garden.
