Poppies
Poppies are beloved for their delicate, papery petals and vibrant colors, ranging from red and orange to pink and white. They thrive in well-drained soil and full sun, making them an ideal choice for gardens in zone 5. Poppies are often grown from seed and can be sown directly into the garden in early spring or fall. While their blooms are short-lived, they make a striking addition to garden beds and borders.
In floral design, poppies add an ephemeral beauty to fresh bouquets, though they can be tricky as cut flowers due to their short vase life. To prolong their freshness, sear the stem ends with a flame or hot water immediately after cutting. Poppies also produce beautiful seed heads, which can be dried and used in arrangements for added texture and interest.
