First signs of life

There’s something magical about the first signs of growth in a new season, and here at Maple Street Farmstand, we’re already seeing our very first flower starts come to life!

Under grow lights, the ranunculus have begun to unfurl their first leaves—tiny but full of promise.

Last weekend, armed with my long spreadsheet of plans, I seeded violas, stock, and snapdragons using soil blocks, a method I’m excited to try for the first time with these flowers. Each tiny sprout feels like a step closer to a season bursting with color and blooms.

Since all of these flowers are new to me, there’s a lot of curiosity (and maybe a little nervous anticipation) about how they’ll grow. To make the most of the season, I’ll be stagger planting to extend the bloom time, ensuring a steady stream of flowers throughout the months ahead. My plan is to sell violas as plant starts, giving fellow gardeners a chance to bring a little spring color into their own spaces, while the rest—snapdragons, stock, and ranunculus—will be grown for cut flowers.

The process of growing from seed is a mix of patience, learning, and excitement. As the days lengthen and the plants continue to grow, I can’t wait to share updates on their progress. Here’s to a season full of flowers, new experiences, and plenty of beauty ahead!
